Philip Lee LLP has recruited Alan Connell, formerly managing partner and head of tax at Eversheds Sutherland Ireland, as a senior partner in the firm’s tax practice.

Mr Connell will work alongside Michael McGivern, head of tax, as part of the continued expansion of the firm’s tax offering.

Commenting on the appointment, Mr McGivern said: “Alan’s appointment marks a major step forward in the development of our tax offering. As a recognised leader in corporate tax law, his international reputation and depth of experience significantly enhance our capabilities.

“We’re proud to welcome a practitioner of Alan’s calibre to the firm’s growing collection of experts, as we continue to shape a practice that leads the way in delivering strategic tax advice to internationally focused clients.”

Mr Connell has extensive experience in corporate tax law and has advised on some of the largest inward investment and restructuring projects in Ireland.

He primarily advises international financial institutions and corporations — including Fortune 100 companies — doing business in and from Ireland and is standing tax counsel to numerous internationally focused organisations in respect of their Irish operations.

Mr Connell’s practice encompasses all aspects of corporate tax with particular emphasis on, and expertise in, inward investment projects, cross border tax planning, corporate restructurings, public and private mergers and acquisitions, demergers, flotations, private equity, joint ventures, as well as transfer pricing.

He also advises on Irish stamp duty matters, particularly in the context of global reorganisations.

In addition to being a member of the Law Society of Ireland, the Law Society of Northern Ireland and the Law Society of England and Wales, Mr Connell is an active member of a number of international tax bodies, including the International Bar Association, the International Fiscal Association and the American Chamber of Commerce.

He is a frequent speaker on taxation law topics and has written on Irish tax issues for many professional publications including the International Tax Review, Tax Notes International, the International Comparative Legal Guide and the Irish Tax Review.

Commenting on his arrival, Mr Connell said: “Joining Philip Lee at this point in its growth strategy presents an exciting opportunity to help shape a dynamic and internationally focused tax practice.

“The firm’s ambition and energy are clear, and I look forward to contributing to a team that’s committed to delivering strategic, commercially focused advice to support clients operating in ever evolving and complex tax environments.”
