Paul Tweed building case against tech companies over defamatory AI chatbots

A leading defamation lawyer has the world’s biggest tech companies in his crosshairs over AI chatbots spreading misinformation.
Belfast solicitor Paul Tweed, founder of WP Tweed & Co, told Irish Legal News that his firm already has “a broad range of clients who have consulted us in relation to defamatory comments and misinformation on generative AI platforms/bots”.
Mr Tweed last month secured a €100,000 payout for former Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams in his defamation case against the BBC.
He has 30 years’ experience in defamation law and made a name for himself acting for A-list celebrities including Britney Spears, Liam Neeson, Harrison Ford and Sinéad O’Connor — which he recalled in his recent book.
British newspaper The Telegraph reported Sunday that Mr Tweed is building a test case against Meta over the output of its AI assistant on Facebook and Instagram.
“We are considering all legal options, along with appropriate jurisdictions and funding,” Mr Tweed told Irish Legal News.
“We are also taking action for clients in relation to unauthorised use of their creative work for AI training.”
He added: “We are rapidly entering a whole new era, presenting novel legal challenges.”
