Patents of precedence granted to 26 barristers and two solicitors

Patents of precedence have been granted to 26 barristers and two solicitors, allowing them to use the title of senior counsel.

The barristers are Michael O’Donnell, Barry Doherty, Kilda Mooney, Gráinne Lee, Patricia Hill, Jeananne McGovern, David O’Dwyer, Proinsias Ó Maolchalain, Rory White, Mary-Jo Butler, Conall MacCarthy, Seamus Breen, Cormac MacNamara, Garrett McCormack, Michael Binchy, James Burke, Diarmuid Collins, Conor J. O’Doherty, Shelley Horan, Alan Brady, Mark William Murphy, Morgan Shelley, Marc Thompson Grolimund, Andrew Whelan, Kevin John White, Diana Stuart.

The solicitors are A&L Goodbody partner Duncan Inverarity and Mason Hayes & Curran partner Gerard Kelly.

Patents of precedence are granted by the government on the advice of an advisory committee consisting of the chief justice, the presidents of the Court of Appeal and the High Court, the attorney general, the Bar Council chairperson, the Law Society president and a lay member of the LSRA.

Just a quarter of those awarded patents of precedence this year are women, a sharp decline from 35 per cent last year and well below 2022, the only year in Irish legal history to date where more were granted to women than men.
