Trinity College Dublin law student Omotolani Sogbetun has been awarded the 2025 Matheson Cara Scholarship.

The scholarship, delivered as part of Matheson’s impactful business programme, is named in honour of the firm’s late partner, Cara O’Hagan.

It is open to second-year undergraduate students in TCD, including students on the higher education access route or the disability access route to education schemes, mature students and students who face barriers in third-level education.

As winner of this year’s scholarship, Ms Sogbetun enjoyed a place on Matheson’s recent summer internship programme.

She will also receive a bursary of €5,000 for each academic year and will have a dedicated mentor from Matheson to provide support during her university journey.

Michael Jackson, managing partner of Matheson, said: “Congratulations to Omotolani, to whom we are delighted to award this year’s Matheson Cara Scholarship.

“This scholarship is an integral part of the firm’s impactful business programme. It reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting the next generation of legal talent and fostering a more inclusive legal community, which were so important to our late partner Cara O’Hagan in whose memory the scholarship is named.

“We are proud to continue our partnership with Trinity on this initiative and we were delighted to welcome Omotolani to our recent summer internship programme, which gives students a real insight into our work, people and culture.”

Ms Sogbetun said: “I am incredibly honoured to be awarded this bursary. As a first-generation Nigerian immigrant who has overcome significant challenges, this recognition reminds me that my background is not a barrier but a strength.

“Matheson and the Cara programme have given me the confidence to see a future for myself in the legal profession, and I am deeply grateful for the support and belief they’ve shown in my journey.”
