Northern Ireland’s lady chief justice reflects on judicial independence in new podcast
The Lady Chief Justice of Northern Ireland, Dame Siobhan Keegan, has reflected on the importance of judicial independence in maintaining public confidence in justice systems in a wide-ranging conversation published by Irish Rule of Law International (IRLI).
Speaking on the latest episode of The Justice Edit, IRLI’s podcast, the senior judge discussed institutional resilience, professional responsibility and the long-term implications of declining public trust in democratic systems.
“By the time the damage is visible, recovery can be difficult, and public trust is dangerously undermined,” she said.
Drawing on Northern Ireland’s experience during the Troubles — when courts continued to operate despite the suspension of other political institutions — she described judicial independence and fairness as foundational to societal stability.
Dame Siobhan highlighted: “Judicial independence and fairness have been lifelines for communities seeking security and equality.”
The conversation also considered contemporary pressures facing courts and the responsibility borne by legal professionals in safeguarding the integrity of justice systems.
The episode coincides with the publication of IRLI’s strategy for 2026 to2030, which reaffirms the organisation’s commitment to strengthening justice institutions and supporting cross-jurisdictional collaboration.
