Northern Ireland in talks around ban on pornography depicting strangulation

Northern Ireland’s Department of Justice has said it is engaging with the UK government on the proposed ban in England and Wales of pornography depicting strangulation.

The Ministry of Justice announced last week that it would bring forward a legislative amendment criminalising pornography which depicts “acts of strangulation”.

It came after backbench MPs had unsuccessfully sought to bring forward amendments on the subject, some of which would have amended legislation which extends to Northern Ireland.

A spokesperson for Northern Ireland’s Department of Justice told Irish Legal News that the “new plans as announced by the Ministry of Justice are intended for England and Wales”.

“However,” they added, “the Department of Justice is currently engaging with the Ministry of Justice to explore the detail of these provisions.”

The UK government says its amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill will build on the Obscene Publications Act 1959, and the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008 which criminalises the possession of extreme porn.

An independent review commissioned by the previous Conservative government had found that media sources including pornography had established strangulation during sex as a “sexual norm”.
