NI: NI human rights commissioner meets with European counterpart

Northern Ireland’s human rights commissioner discussed legacy issues and plans to scrap the UK’s Human Rights Act 1998 at a meeting in Belfast yesterday.

Chief Commissioner Les Allamby of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC) spoke with the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Nils Mui┼żnieks, about the critical human rights issues facing Northern Ireland and the UK.

Other subjects discussed included the human rights of migrants, in particular refugees, as well as counter-terrorism and surveillance measures.

Mr Mui┼żnieks visited Belfast as part of his wider visit to the United Kingdom between 17-23 January 2016.

His visit focusses on issues relating to the UK’s role and relationship with the European human rights protection system.
