New action plan for restorative justice in Ireland

A new three-year action plan for promoting restorative justice has been published by the Probation Service.
The 22-page document, covering 2025 to 2027, is designed to systematically implement restorative justice interventions, ensuring they become a cornerstone of the service’s rehabilitative efforts.
It also contains a detailed overview of key developments, the principles and the delivery of restorative justice and its importance within the criminal justice system.
The implementation of the action plan is to be supported by an implementation steering committee which will be expanded over the course of the next three years.
Rachel Lillis of the Probation Service said: “Aligned with the Department of Justice’s vision, the restorative justice action plan supports a comprehensive and victim sensitive approach to addressing harm, rehabilitation and reintegration, ensuring restorative justice remains central to our mission of promoting public safety and reducing reoffending and providing victims with a voice.”
