An obituary for the Mr Justice Declan Budd has been published by the Sunday Independent.

“Declan Budd, a former High Court and Court of ­Criminal Appeal judge and ­president of the Law ­Reform Commission, has died at the age of 82.
Born in Dublin on July 27, 1943, he grew up in Donnybrook and Dartry in south Dublin.

“His father had a distinguished ­legal career. Born in Ennis, Co Clare, Frederic Gardner Orford Budd (1904-1976) was elected to the Seanad from the Dublin University constituency in August 1951 but resigned shortly afterwards to take up a High Court vacancy.

“He was promoted to the Supreme Court in 1966, where he became ­involved in a number of important Constitutional cases, such as authorisation in 1974 of private importation of contraceptives for personal use. He married Oonah, another Trinity graduate, and they had a family of three girls and one boy.

“Their son Declan Nicholas Orford Budd was educated from the age of 13 at Radley College in Oxford, where he remained until 18.”
