Ministers expected to approve review of FOI laws

Ministers are expected to approve a comprehensive review of Ireland’s freedom of information legislation to report by the middle of next year.
Public expenditure minister Michael McGrath, who spoke about his desire to review the law in June, will put a proposal to his cabinet colleagues today.
He told RTÉ News that the review will aim to improve the legislation rather than “narrow or limit the scope of it”, and it would include “good faith” examination of proposals from opposition parties.
Sinn Féin TDs Mairéad Farrell and Sorca Clarke have said they will introduce a private members’ bill to extend FOI legislation to more public bodies and other bodies which receive public funds.
The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has said any review should include reconsideration of the exclusions and exemptions under the law, including the exemption of the office of president.
Ireland’s current freedom of information regime is underpinned by the Freedom of Information Act 2014.
