NI: Men given 'paedophile hunting' ban as bail condition

Three self-styled “paedophile hunters” have been ordered by Belfast Magistrates’ Court to desist from further such activities while on bail, the Belfast Telegraph reports.

George Keenan, 34, Richard Curtin, 32, and Tim Heron, 28, are facing charges of assault, false imprisonment and attempted intimidation in relation to their alleged confrontation of BBC reporter Kevin Magee at a Botanic coffee shop earlier this month.

Mr Magee was at the time working on a BBC report regarding increasingly controversial “paedophile hunting” groups, which confront alleged paedophiles and often attempt to make a “citizens’ arrest”.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, the three men’s bail was granted on the basis that they abide by the following conditions:

  • Desisting with activities associated with paedophile hunter groups.
  • Having no role whatsoever in identifying or confronting those suspected to online sexual offences.
  • No contact with anyone associated with the groups or people previously confronted about alleged sexual offending.
  • A ban on using online social media platforms, websites or instructing others to use them on their behalf.
  • No access to any site containing public records or the electoral role.
  • No contact with their co-accused or any witnesses in the case.
  • Abide by curfew and police reporting conditions.
