Mayo-based J.V. Geary Solicitors has moved to a formal partnership structure, with principal solicitor John Geary welcoming his long-standing colleague Ita Feeney as a partner in the firm.

The firm, based on Linenhall Street in Castlebar, was established by Mr Geary in 2010 and has since grown to a team of seven solicitors, supported by a dedicated legal and administrative staff.

He launched the firm on returning to his native Mayo after over a decade in Dublin, first training and qualifying as a solicitor at Matheson and then taking up roles at Margaretson and Greene and D.J. Synnott.

He continues to edit The Parchment, the quarterly legal publication of the Dublin Solicitors Bar Association (DSBA), a role he commenced in 2009.

Mr Geary said: “Ita is a talented solicitor with extensive experience. She and I have worked alongside each other for many years, and it is only fitting that she joins me as a partner in the practice as we move into the next phase of the firm’s growth.

“She is a person of the highest integrity, and I greatly admire her legal skills and her ability to practice across a wide range of areas.”

Ms Feeney, originally from Easkey in County Sligo, qualified as a solicitor in 2011, having previously worked in Dublin at ByrneWallace. She has since developed a broad and respected legal practice serving clients across the west of Ireland and beyond.

She has particular expertise in all aspects of property and real estate law, advising on the acquisition and sale of residential and commercial properties, development land, housing schemes, retail units, and multi-property investments.

She also represents clients, both landlords and tenants, in commercial leasing matters and complex property transactions.

A highly experienced litigator, Ms Feeney regularly advises on personal injury, contractual disputes, and property-related litigation, with a reputation for practical, strategic legal solutions.

She also practices in criminal defence, representing clients from Garda station detention through to serious criminal trials before the Circuit Criminal Court.

In the area of family law, she advises on both contentious and non-contentious divorce and separation matters, with a client-focused and sensitive approach.

From 2020 to 2024, Ms Feeney served as honorary secretary of the Mayo Solicitors’ Bar Association, demonstrating her commitment to the local legal profession.

Reflecting on her appointment, Ms Feeney said: “I am delighted to be joining John Geary in partnership.

“This is a dynamic and progressive practice with a strong reputation for client service and legal excellence.

“I look forward to contributing to the continued growth of the firm and to serving the people of Mayo and beyond in this new role.”
