Lost audio recordings of the Arms Trial resurface

Long-lost audio recordings of the Arms Trial, one of the most high-profile criminal trials in Irish legal history, have been rediscovered and will be heard for the first time.

This week marked the 50th anniversary of the opening of the trial of four men, including former government ministers Charles Haughey and Neil Blaney, in connection with an alleged plot to import arms and funnel them into Northern Ireland.

The audio recordings from the trial, which ended in acquittals, will be made public for the first time as part of an upcoming podcast series, RTÉ reports.

Michael Heney, author of The Arms Crisis, told the broadcaster: “The tapes lay hidden in a black briefcase in the Bank of Ireland vault for almost 50 years, a precious fragment of one of the great historic trials of the 20th century.”
