Litigation linked to collapse of solicitors' insurer returns to High Court

Litigation linked to the collapse of the Solicitors Mutual Defence Fund (SMDF) has returned to the High Court for the first time in nearly a decade.

The fund, now known as R&Q Ireland, has issued fresh High Court proceedings against Bloxham Stockbrokers to seek judgment for €4.9 million allegedly outstanding under a 2011 settlement.

It has also applied to re-enter proceedings against Bloxham which were initiated in 2009 and were “struck out with liberty to re-enter” after the settlement was announced in 2011.

Bloxham, which was blamed by the fund for its dramatic collapse, itself collapsed in 2012.

Mr Justice Denis McDonald reserved judgment on the application yesterday, The Irish Times reports.
