Kneecap terrorism case thrown out over technical error

A terrorism prosecution brought against a member of Belfast rap trio Kneecap has been thrown out due to a technical error.
Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, 27, also known by his stage name “Mo Chara”, had denied breaching section 13(1)(b) and (3) of the Terrorism Act 2000 by allegedly displaying a Hezbollah flag at a Kneecap concert in London in November 2024.
Judge Paul Goldspring today said the proceedings “were not instituted in the correct form” as they lacked the required consent from both the director of public prosecutions and the attorney general, which were required within a six-month time limit.
Mr Óg Ó hAnnaidh’s solicitor Darragh Mackin, partner at Belfast firm Phoenix Law, has hailed the outcome as a victory for freedom of expression.
