Irish NGO joins condemnation of Israeli raid on civil society groups

Irish Rule of Law International (IRLI) has joined the international condemnation of Israel’s designation of six Palestinian civil society organisations as terror groups.

The NGO issued a statement in the wake of last month’s raid by Israeli security forces of the offices of some of the organisations, which saw their doors sealed and some of their assets seized.

Nearly a year ago, Israel designated Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association, Al-Haq, Bisan Center for Research and Development, Defense for Children International – Palestine, the Union of Agricultural Work Committees and the Union of Palestinian Women Committees as terrorist organisations.

The Israeli government accuses the groups of having links to the left-wing Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and its armed wing.

In a statement, IRLI said: “Thriving civil society and respect for fundamental freedoms are a cornerstone of the rule of law and accountability. IRLI in particular denounces this flagrant attempt to muzzle [civil society organisations] who document violations of international law, and have played a key role in Palestine’s case before the International Criminal Court.”
