Irish company identified in connection with sale of location data

The Data Protection Commission (DPC) has identified two companies, one of which is Irish-based, in connection with the sale of location data from tens of thousands of Irish smartphones.

The regulator is continuing to investigate the findings of an RTÉ Prime Time programme which revealed that data showing the specific movement of tens of thousands of smartphones in Ireland is available to purchase.

The DPC said it first became aware of the matter when contacted by Prime Time.

In an update published on Friday, the DPC said: “The DPC, using its statutory powers, has this week obtained both the identity of the two companies and the dataset at the heart of last Thursday’s RTÉ Prime Time programme.

“One of the companies is Irish-based and the DPC has this week attended an office in Dublin.

“The second company is based in another EU country and the DPC is engaging with the relevant EU Data Protection Authority.

“The DPC’s investigation into the matter is continuing.”
