NI: Former trainee solicitor told to expect jail for assaults on now ex-girlfriend

A former trainee solicitor who admitted assaulting his now ex-girlfriend over a six month period is facing jail.

Kevin McDaid, 32, was told by Judge Philip Babington to expect a lengthy period in prison when he appeared at a plea and sentencing hearing in Londonderry Crown Court yesterday, the Belfast Telegraph reports.

He has pleaded guilty to 13 offences relating to his violent conduct against his former partner.

Defence barrister Michael McAleer said his client is “aware of the likely outcome … he has lost his career, which was at an advanced stage of study, to become a solicitor”.

He added: “He lost his job as a direct result of his court appearances and he will now not be admitted to the roll of solicitors.”
