COALESCE funding success for law academic
Dr Lydia Bracken
Dr Lydia Bracken of the School of Law, University of Limerick, has been awarded over €200,000 in research funding under the Research Ireland Collaborative Alliances for Societal Challenges (COALESCE) programme for her project on LGBTQI+ parent families’ experiences of accessing reproductive and maternity care in Ireland: Aligning Law and Reality (FAMILY Project).
The FAMILY project is one of eight new projects funded under the 2025 COALESCE programme. These projects are led by an Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) researcher, working in close collaboration with a science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) researcher, bringing novel interdisciplinary approaches to solving complex societal challenges. The co-PI for the FAMILY Project is Dr Sylvia Murphy-Tighe, School of Nursing & Midwifery, UL.
The FAMILY Project is investigating the experiences of LGBTQI+ parent families who have accessed reproductive healthcare in Ireland, with a focus on the fertility and maternity care settings; how these experiences align with or deviate from their legal rights and entitlements; and the support available to healthcare professionals to assist them in understanding the relevant laws and best practice when working with LGBTQI+ parent families.
