‘Mr Justice Seamus Henchy’ will be broadcast on Wednesday 16 September at 6pm and will tell the story of the Corofin native whose judgments helped shape modern Ireland and continue to influence Irish law and society today.

Born in Corofin, County Clare, Séamus Henchy went on to become one of the most distinguished figures in the Irish judiciary. Following a highly successful career at the Bar, he was appointed to the High Court in 1962 and later served on the Supreme Court, where he developed a reputation for his exceptional legal mind, independence of thought and remarkable command of the written word.

 The documentary examines Mr Henchy’s journey from his childhood in North Clare to the highest levels of the Irish judiciary. It also explores some of his most significant judgments and how his interpretation of the Constitution contributed to the development of Irish law, particularly in the area of individual and constitutional rights.

A number of Ireland’s most prominent legal figures contribute to the documentary, including Supreme Court judge Mr Justice Gerard Hogan, former Chief Justice Frank Clarke, and former Supreme Court judges Mr Justice John MacMenamin and Ms Justice Marie Baker. Together, they provide a unique insight into Mr Henchy’s legal brilliance, his distinctive approach to judgment writing and the enormous influence his decisions have had on generations of judges, barristers, solicitors and legal scholars.

The documentary also looks beyond the courtroom to examine Mr Henchy as a person and explores the experiences and influences that helped shape his remarkable career.

Contributors reflect on his intelligence, personality and extraordinary ability to express complex legal principles with clarity, eloquence and precision. Following his retirement from the Supreme Court in 1988, Mr Henchy entered another significant period of public service when he became the first chairman of the Independent Radio and Television Commission (IRTC).

Mr Justice Séamus Henchy retired from public life in 1993. He died on 5 April 2009 at the age of 91, leaving behind an extraordinary legal legacy. His judgments remain widely studied and respected, while his contribution to Irish constitutional law continues to influence the courts today.
