NI: Belfast rape trial lawyers accuse Rory Best of libel

Lawyers involved in the controversial 2018 Belfast rape trial have threatened to sue former Ireland rugby captain Rory Best for libel, according to reports.

The retired sportsman has received correspondence from defamation lawyer Paul Tweed on behalf of partners at KRW LAW LLP and barristers Brendan Kelly QC and Stephen Toal BL, the Belfast Telegraph reported on Saturday.

Mr Best attended court to support his former Ulster and Ireland teammate Paddy Jackson during the high-profile nine-week trial in which Mr Jackson and three others were found not guilty of raping a 19-year-old woman.

He told a radio interview in January this year that he regretted attending the trial and “had not thought I would upset anyone by attending court”.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, lawyers acting for Mr Jackson allege that Mr Best libelled them in other comments in the same interview.
