And finally... Prison bosses left feeling dopey

Mountjoy Prison bosses ordered a full prison lock down yesterday afternoon when the alarm was raised over a suspicious item discovered on C wing and believed to be a firearm.

The Irish Prison Service confirmed that a suspicious item was discovered at around 12.30pm yesterday.

Following an initial examination by prison staff and gardaí, it was suspected the item may be part of a firearm containing a number of bullets, leading to a general search of the prison.

Subsequent to forensic examination by An Garda Síochána, it has been determined that the offending item was not part of a weapon — but was, in fact, a cannabis grinder.

It is difficult to see how the items can be confused except by those who have encountered neither.

The Prison Service has defended its decision to lock down the prison.
