And finally… no half measures

An Australian man who accidentally shot someone has been jailed for attempted murder after he subsequently fired two more shots to put the dying man out of his misery.

In a bizarre case before the Victorian Supreme Court, Daniel Darrington, 39, said that Rocky Matskassy, 31, was accidentally shot in the head while the two men were struggling over a gun.

However, Mr Darrington admitted to shooting Mr Matskassy a second and third time - “to stop him suffering”.

The jury was not able to determine whether Mr Matskassy was killed by the first bullet or the subsequent ones.

Justice Paul Coghlan said the truth would never be known.

Mr Darrington faced attempted murder charges instead of manslaughter as a result of the two intentional shots.

He was found guilty and sentenced to eight years in prison.
