And finally… lock and Kia

New York City is suing car companies Hyundai and Kia after a viral TikTok trend demonstrated how easy their vehicles are to steal.

The lawsuit alleges that Hyundai and Kia’s failure to implement anti-theft measures “opened the floodgates to vehicle theft, crime sprees, reckless driving, and public harm”, FT reports.

In particular, Hyundai and Kia cars do not have immobilisers and use mechanical keys instead of a key fob.

Videos which went viral on TikTok last year showed how a standard USB cable can be used to start Hyundai and Kia cars.

As a result, Hyundai thefts in New York surged by 767 per cent in the last quarter of 2022 while Kia thefts surged by 890 per cent.
