And finally… invitation to treaty

A Yorkshire football club is attempting to avail itself of a 12th century treaty in order to play in Scotland.

Doncaster City FC has contacted the Scottish Football Association (SFA) “applying for next year’s competition” on the basis of the 1136 treaty, which gave the town to Scotland.

Club spokesman Josh Rutherford said: “We have applied to join the Scottish Cup next season, on the technicality that Doncaster could be part of Scotland.

“In 1136 King Stephen was King of England, and Doncaster was ceded to King David of Scotland in the first Treaty of Durham, and it was never officially given back. We explored that option and have written a letter to the Scottish Football Association, applying for next year’s competition.”

Two English clubs already play in Scotland – Berwick Rangers and Tweedmouth Rangers.
