The incident took place on the border of the US states of Vermont and Massachusetts on Monday evening, the Boston Herald reports.

Police said a passenger in a car threw an object “later determined to be a large pickle” at the highway worker, which “caused him pain”.

Officers subsequently tracked down the car and arrested the man, who will appear in court next month on a charge of simple assault.
