President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov has dedicated April 19th to the alabay, a symbol of national pride, Sky News reports.

His son and deputy prime minister judged a major competition to mark the occasion, with alabays competing on their appearance and agility.

The top prize was eventually bestowed, in front of cheering crowds, to a dog in the country’s border force.
