And finally… council Trumped

A man has won his battle with Clare County Council over walking across Donald Trump’s luxury golf course to access a local beach.

Mr Trump himself was apparently unbothered about the issue, leading the council to give up halfway through a Supreme Court case.

Now the council has been left with a €150,000 bill for legal costs.

James McNulty brought forward the case in defence of his right to access Doonbeg beach by crossing the Doonbeg Golf Course.

He failed in the High Court on a technicality and appealed the decision to the Supreme Court.

The county council had decided to extinguish the right of way even though, as Mr Justice Frank Clarke observed, it appeared “Trump has no interest in extinguishing the right of way”.

However, the council eventually changed its mind when Trump International Golf Links, which bought the course in 2014, made no response to the council’s extinguishment proposal.

Mr Justice Clarke said the appeal was therefore moot and awarded costs against the council.
