A&L Goodbody pro bono project wraps up in Tanzania

A&L Goodbody LLP has partnered with Irish Rule of Law International (IRLI) to complete a significant pro bono project with the Institute of Judicial Administration (IJA) in Tanzania.

Lawyers from the firm’s Dublin and Belfast offices have been working on the IJA’s new compendium of child sexual abuse cases, with ALG lawyers mapping the domestic and international frameworks on the protection of children from sexual abuse and the evolution of the case law in this area.

The completed report was launched last week.

Mr Justice Dr Paul Kihwelo of the Court of Appeal of Tanzania, principal of the IJA, said: “The preparation and, ultimately, the publication of the compendium of child sexual abuse cases of Tanzania and Ireland is a huge milestone and a clear testimony of the impact of collaboration between countries and institutions from the north and the south.

“I am very optimistic that the compendium will have significant impact as a useful resource not only for judges and magistrates from Tanzania and Ireland but also all stakeholders in the justice system.

“I am extremely thankful to all those at A&L Goodbody LLP who contributed significantly in making the compendium possible. Their efforts demonstrate the positive impact of the firm’s pro bono practice and will have long-lasting benefits for many in Tanzania.

“The Institute of Judicial Administration looks forward to continuing collaboration with a shared goal of achieving meaningful justice.”
