Use of court poor box in post-pandemic bounce-back

The use of the court poor box increased last year despite long-standing government promises to phase it out, new figures reveal.

The Courts Service said the poor box was used last year in 27 cases involving 27 motorists, up from 13 cases involving nine motorists in 2020, The Irish Times reports.

The post-Covid bounce-back will dismay critics of the archaic system in which District Court judges may order a defendant to make a donation in lieu of conviction.

Donations to the poor box are passed on to charities chosen by judges, with hundreds of charities benefiting in recent years.
