US: Couple charged with murder after death of severely obese seven-year-old
A Michigan couple have been charged with second-degree murder after prosecutors alleged their seven-year-old son died weighing almost 18st (113kg) after years of medical neglect.
Damien O’Brien, 40, and Jessica O’Brien, 41, were charged following the death of their son, Casper O’Brien, who was taken to hospital after emergency services were called to the family’s home in Flint Township on 4 November 2025. He later died.
According to prosecutors, Casper measured 4ft 2.5in (1.3m) and weighed 255lbs at the time of his death. Authorities allege his parents caused serious physical harm by failing to obtain appropriate medical care and by not providing a safe living environment.
Police said the boy, who was reportedly immobile, was found in a makeshift bed shared with four family members.
An autopsy report stated that Casper was last seen by his primary care physician in February 2024, when he was referred to a paediatric endocrinologist. Investigators allege his parents never attended the appointment.
Deputy medical examiner John A. Bechinski wrote in the report that Casper’s diet reportedly consisted of potato chips and fries because of texture issues.
Genesee County prosecutor David Leyton said the family had access to healthcare through the father’s employment and did not lack resources.
The couple also face a charge of second-degree child abuse involving their five-year-old daughter. Court documents allege the girl was also medically classified as morbidly obese and was found outside the family home naked, dirty and with knots in her hair.
If convicted of murder, the O’Briens face a possible life sentence.
