Traveller ethnicity recognition statement has ‘no legal effect’

A statement in the Dáil in which former Taoiseach Enda Kenny recognised Traveller ethnicity has no legal effect, a High Court judge has said.
Mr Justice Robert Eager made the remarks in a case concerning a homeless Traveller family appealing to Clare County Coucil for housing after their previous home burned down.
They wanted to amend their case so as to include claims based on the statement of recognition of Traveller ethnicity, The Irish Times reports.
However, Mr Justice Eager said he would not allow the family to advance an “entirely different” case at this point in the proceedings.
He added that the statement of recognition had no legal effect, saying it “clearly is not legislation but fact” and had no relevance to the case.
