Solicitors allege defamation in press statement

Businessman Denis O’Brien is being sued by two solicitors who allege they were defamed in a press statement responding to a report on media ownership in Ireland, The Irish Times reports.

The statement was published on September 26th, 2016, on behalf of Mr O’Brien by his spokesman James Morrissey, who is a defendant in the case.

They deny defamation and have offered defences of truth and honest opinion as well as qualified privilege and fair and reasonable publication in a matter of public interest.

Mr Justice Mark Heslin struck out a number of pleas of truth and honest opinion in the defences in a judgment on pre-trial applications published this week.
