Solicitor accused of bringing cocaine into Mountjoy can avoid jail

A solicitor accused of bringing cocaine into Mountjoy Prison can avoid conviction if he makes a donation to a charity assisting drug users, the Irish Examiner reports.

Dublin solicitor Aonghus McCarthy, 32, was charged last November on one charge of conveying a controlled drug into Mountjoy Prison or to a person in the prison on 8 February 2017.

When the case resumed before Dublin District Court yesterday, Judge Gerry Jones said he accepted that Mr McCarthy probably did not know about the 0.33 grams of cocaine found in his wallet.

Gardaí told the court Mr McCarthy had suggested the cocaine could have been put into his wallet by someone else at a party he attended.

The judge said he would strike out the case if Mr McCarthy donated €1,250 to the charity Merchant Quay’s drug rehabilitation projects.

The case has been adjourned until Tuesday 6 March.
