Russia: Grand Theft Auto gang brings carnage to court

Three members of a Russian gang were killed in a shoot out in a Moscow court yesterday after they tried to grab security guards’ guns and take hostages in a bungled escape attempt.

The men, who were members of a gang on trial for terrorising motorists, were shot dead at Moscow Regional Court.

Nine men were on trial accused of killing 17 motorists and attempting to kill a further two. According to prosecutors, the men placed spikes on the roads, forced motorists out their cars and then shot them dead.

Russian media dubbed them the “Grand Theft Auto” gang after the video game which allows players to engage in road carnage and carry out massacres.

Local media reported that one of the gang members had fought for ISIS in Syria before coming to Russia.

Lawyer Sofya Rubasskaya, who was in court, told AFP: “I heard shots, there were more than 20 shots.” She added that she saw an injured female guard whose “face was all bloody”.
