Ronan Daly Jermyn has hosted a joint seminar on the impending EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Galway alongside broking and solutions company Willis Towers Watson.

Solicitor Michelle Ryan and partner JP Gilmartin of the firm addressed the seminar, as well as Willis Towers Watson account executive Susan Cavanagh and Seamus Carroll, head of the data protection unit at the Department of Justice and Equality.

Ms Ryan said: “GDPR is a serious regulation with the potential for fines that dwarf those under the existing law. It is crucial that organisations start taking steps now to prepare for compliance.”

The seminar also covered the importance of a “cyber-savvy” workforce, with Ms Cavanagh commenting that “employees are an organisation’s weakest link and strongest defence”.

A recent Willis Towers Watson survey demonstrated that two-thirds of cyber breaches area result of employee negligence or malfeasance.
