An assault on a prison officer outside Cloverhill Courthouse in Dublin has prompted calls for prison officers to be issued with personal protection equipment, the Irish Examiner reports.

Gardaí are currently investigating an assault on at least one prison officer who is said to have been headbutted and punched in the face.

There are reports that two other prison officers were also assaulted in the incident.

In response, the Prison Officers’ Association (POA) has called for staff to be issued with basic personal protection (PP) equipment.

John Clinton, general secretary of the POA, said: “The POA again expresses its very serious concern regarding assaults on prison officers.

“We have requested that standard PP equipment be issued, such as telescopic batons and incapacitant sprays.”

A spokesperson for the Irish Prison Service said: “We can confirm an incident occurred at Cloverhill courthouse in which a PSEC [Prison Service Escorts Corps] officer was assaulted and these matters have been referred to the authorities.”
