Plans for opening of Limerick courts complex in final stages

Plans for the opening of the Limerick Criminal Courts Complex next month are almost complete, the Limerick Leader reports.

Stakeholders have met on a number of occasions in recent weeks to smooth the way for the holding of sittings from the week starting 5 February.

The complex was originally set to be opened last October, but the opening was delayed until the new year without explanation.

All sittings of Limerick District Court and Limerick Circuit Criminal Court will take place in the new complex, while civil and family law cases will continue to be heard at the smaller courthouse at Merchant’s Quay.

The Courts Service of Ireland has not yet confirmed the opening date for the new complex, but summonses requiring people to attend hearings in the complex have reportedly already been issued.

Members of the Limerick Court Users Group are expected to be briefed on Thursday about the opening date.

It is expected that hearings will begin in February but the official opening ceremony will be delayed until March to coincide with the first-ever sitting of the Supreme Court in Limerick.
