Physical court hearings to resume from Monday

Physical court hearings are due to resume on a “phased basis” from Monday following a month dominated by Covid-19 disruption.

Criminal jury trials in the Central Criminal Court and in the Circuit Court, and civil proceedings in the Court of Appeal, will be heard by way of a physical hearing from Monday 24 January 2022.

The Courts Service today released a statement following a review of the current situation by the Chief Justice, the presidents of the Court of Appeal, High Court, Circuit Court and District Court, and the Courts Service.

It is “now considered possible to start resuming in-person hearings on a more general basis”, the statement says, with resumption of business and in-person cases to be “arranged as resources permit on a location-by-location basis across the country”.

It adds that the successful resumption of business “will be reliant on users continuing to follow the Covid-19 public health measures”.

“The use of staggered lists, video link to prisons, remote callovers and courts will continue to assist with management of footfall in buildings”, the Courts Service said.

Updates on the resumption of business will be communicated through the usual channels on courts.ie and through social media by the different jurisdictions and local offices as and when the information becomes available.
