Parents fined €800 for not sending children to school

Two parents were ordered to pay a fine of €400 each in Dublin District Court after failing to ensure that their children attended school.

Judge John O’Neill convicted the couple of breaching the Education (Welfare) Act 2000 after a two-day hearing, in which the court heard that the eldest of the children missed 87 per cent of school days in one year.

The prosecution was brought by Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, The Irish Times reports.

The father told the court that the children, aged between 11 and 15, had not attended school because of asthma and a vomiting bug.

The court also heard his benefits had been stopped and the family house was not heated.

Judge O’Neill said the case was brought as “a last resort” and advised him to pay the fines within three months to avoid jail.
