The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade provided support to 371 Irish citizens who were arrested abroad last year, according to new end-of-year statistics.

The figure represents a nearly 17 per cent increase on the figure of 316 in 2017, but is still below the 402 recorded in 2016.

Tánaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney said: “The 2018 demand reflects the growing number of Irish citizens travelling and living overseas, and the volume and complexity of consular cases that go with this.

“This presents fresh challenges for the Department and our embassy network in continuing to provide a world-class service for our citizens in 2019.”
