Offences against the State legislation to be renewed for further 12 months

Offences against the State legislation has been renewed by the Government as a result of the continued threat posed by paramilitaries and gangs, the Irish Examiner reports.

At a meeting yesterday the Cabinet agreed to renew the legislation for another 12 months with Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan securing approval to put the extension before the Dáil and Seanad by the end of next month.

Mr Flanagan told colleagues that the he thinks there is a “substantial threat” posed by dissident republican paramilitaries.

Over the course of the past year, the PSNI’s paramilitary crime task force has undertaken more than 200 searches, making more than 50 arrests, the Cabinet heard.

Mr Flanagan added that another reason for the extension is the link between paramilitaries and serious crime.
