Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan has failed in a bid to join Europol, The Irish Times reports.

Ms O’Sullivan was in the running for a senior position in specialist operations at the EU’s law enforcement agency, but has told the Government that her application for the job was unsuccessful.

She is likely to retain her post until the end of her contract in 2021, but is currently on a leave of absence until Monday 4 September.

Ms O’Sullivan has faced calls to resign after a series of Garda controversies, but Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said she retains the full confidence of the Government.
