New asylum accommodation agency on the cards

Roderic O'Gorman

The Irish government is reportedly considering the establishment of a dedicated agency for migrant accommodation.

A scoping exercise has already been completed and work is now taking place to examine “the feasibility of establishing such a migration accommodation agency”, The Irish Times reports.

The agency could ease pressure on the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, headed by Roderic O’Gorman, which is struggling to accommodate Ukrainian refugees and other asylum seekers.

A spokesperson for the Department said: “This work is in its early stages and no decisions around direction of travel have been made as yet, including the establishment of a dedicated migration accommodation agency.”
