Minimum wage set to rise by 25 cents next January

The national minimum wage will be increased by 25 cents to €9.80 per hour from next January.

The Cabinet has accepted the recommendation of the Low Pay Commission at its meeting at Derrynane House in Co Kerry, RTÉ reports.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said the increase is the third since the Government of Fine Gael and the Independents took office.

Mr Varadkar added that the new wage will put Ireland in the top five countries in the world for its national minimum wage in cash terms and purchasing power.

But Mr Varadkar also acknowledged that some will argue the figure is still too low.
