Milestone for electronic monitoring pilot

Milestone for electronic monitoring pilot

Jim O'Callaghan

Plans to pilot electronic monitoring for some offenders have moved forward with the beginning of the formal tendering process.

The Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration had committed to publishing a request for tender by the end of 2025, which it has now done.

An electronic monitoring (EM) service provider is being sought for a 12-month pilot which will focus on individuals on temporary release nationally and those admitted to bail in a pilot area.

The government currently intends for up to 50 electronic tags to be utilised during the €2.1 million pilot.

The pilot approach will allow for processes and procedures to be tested before a wider scale national rollout, while also supporting the agencies involved to build capability and knowledge of the EM system, the Department says.

Insights from the pilot will inform any future national rollout and procurement.
