The Bar of Ireland welcomed European commissioner for democracy, justice, the rule of law and consumer protection, Michael McGrath, to deliver the 2026 Daniel O’Connell Memorial Lecture in Dublin.

The annual lecture honours the legacy of Daniel O’Connell and provides a forum for discussion on contemporary issues relating to democracy, justice, human rights and the rule of law.

Hosted by The Bar of Ireland, yesterday’s lecture invited guests to reflect on the challenges and opportunities facing democratic institutions and the administration of justice in Europe and beyond. The event was opened by Seán Guerin SC, chair of the Council of The Bar of Ireland.

Mr McGrath said: “Daniel O’Connell’s enduring commitment to liberty, equality and the rule of law continues to resonate across Europe today.

“At a time of profound global uncertainty, safeguarding public trust in our democratic institutions and upholding the rule of law has never been more important. Inspired by O’Connell’s legacy, we have an important opportunity to advance and defend the values that underpin our Union and strengthen our shared democratic future.”

Mr Guerin said: “The Bar of Ireland is proud to host the Daniel O’Connell Memorial Lecture, which provides an opportunity to reflect on the values championed by one of Ireland’s most influential figures. As Ireland assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, this discussion comes at a particularly important moment, with democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights at the centre of the European agenda. We are honoured to welcome Commissioner McGrath to share his insights on these critical issues.

“As an independent referral profession, The Bar of Ireland remains committed to supporting and promoting the rule of law, access to justice and the highest ethical and professional standards that underpin public confidence in our legal system”, he added.

Since 2008, The Bar of Ireland has periodically hosted the Daniel O’Connell Memorial Lecture to explore contemporary interpretations of O’Connell’s legacy and his association with statehood, human rights and the rule of law.
