McEntee to make history with birth while in office

Justice Minister Helen McEntee is set to become the first Cabinet minister in Irish history to give birth while in office.
Ms McEntee announced over the weekend that she is expecting her first child with her husband Paul in May 2021.
The news has prompted some discussion of the lack of provision of maternity leave for members of the Oireachtas. The Maternity Protection (Members of the Houses of the Oireachtas) Bill 2018, a private member’s bill which would have changed this, never progressed.
