Man apologises for throwing bottle at judge

A 20-year-old man has apologised for throwing a soft drink bottle at a judge after being refused bail in Limerick District Court last week.

Clyde Keogh narrowly missed Judge Marian O’Leary when he threw a bottle of Coca-Cola at her during a bail hearing.

He had made an emotional appeal to the court to grant bail on the basis that he did not want to miss his three-week-old son’s christening.

However, gardaí objected to bail under section 2 of the Bail Act 1997, believing that he could commit serious offences.

Judge O’Leary suggested after the incident that prisoners “shouldn’t have anything in court capable of being missiles”.

According to the Irish Examiner, Mr Keogh told the court yesterday: “Your honour, I’m sorry for throwing Coke in the courtroom last week. My apologies. I lost the head.”

Mr Keogh has been remanded in custody to appear again on Tuesday 16 February.
