M.E. Hanahoe Solicitors received highest fees in child abuse redress cases

Legal firms have been paid €192.9 million since 2003 for work related to 15,345 claims for compensation by survivors of child abuse.

Dublin-based M.E. Hanahoe Solicitors was the biggest recipient of legal fees, with €18.74 million paid out between 2003–15.

The full costs of the child abuse inquiry and the associated redress scheme are detailed in a new report from the Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG).

Payments were made to 991 law firms, 24 of which received payments of more than €1 million. Payments of €180.2 million were related to legal costs in support of applications, while €12.7 million were in respect of associated High Court proceedings.

The top recipients were:

  • Byrne Carolan Cunningham – €14.56 million (1,209 cases)
  • Lavelle Coleman – €13.56 million (1,054 cases)
  • Burns Kelly Corrigan – €10.29 million (1,014 cases)
  • Murphy English & Co – €10.08 million (683 cases)
  • Hodge Jones & Allen – €5.53 million (533 cases)
  • McMahon Solicitors – €4.98 million (397 cases)
  • Matthew Gold & Co – €4.74 million (340 cases)
  • Paul W Tracey – €4.69 million (590 cases)
  • Margaret Campbell – €4.59 million (417 cases)
  • Madden & Associates – €3.69 million (306 cases)
  • Rosario Lee & Co – €3.50 million (181 cases)
